Winemaker Vincent Cataldi a stalwart for his Italian heritage

This article is from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review about a man that I had the tremendous fortune of knowing.

Although Vincent Cataldi served his country as an American GI during World War II and strongly espoused American ideals, he maintained a kinship for his Italian homeland.

After he graduated from high school and went to work for the Bethlehem Steel Co. in the Pittsburgh area, Mr. Cataldi became a member and leader of the Primavera Lodge of the ISDA (Italian Sons & Daughters of America).

Vincent P. Cataldi of Braddock died on Wednesday, April 28, 2010. He was 88.

"Uncle Vinnie became so involved in the work of the ISDA that he spent 40 years as the president of his lodge," Danny Cerrone said.

"He was so good at what he did during the years he served as president that the lodge would send him to areas primarily on the East Coast to help organize or reorganize lodges," said another nephew, Gary Cerrone.

Danny Cerrone recalled his uncle as bringing an intensity to everything he attempted.

Both nephews recalled Mr. Cataldi as a man always ready to lend a helping hand.

"Uncle Vinnie was proud that the members of his lodge, although it was located in Swissvale, were always on hand to help in neighboring areas," Danny Cerrone said.

"The lodge purchased flak jackets for the Swissvale policemen. They also provided food for the food banks in Braddock and Rankin."

When he wasn't involved with his lodge commitments, Mr. Cataldi, who had been an Eagle Scout, enjoyed working in his garden and making wine.

"But most of all," Gary Cerrone said, "it was the joy that came from his commitment and love for the well-being of his family."

In addition to his wife of 46 years, Rose Cerrone Cataldi, Mr. Cataldi is survived by his sister, Lucille Hohman of North Braddock, and sister-in-law, Mary Cerrone of Braddock.

A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 10 a.m. today in the Madonna del Castello Roman Catholic Church, Swissvale, where Mr. Cataldi was a member. Thomas L. Nied Funeral Home, 7441 Washington St., Swissvale, is in charge of arrangements.
