I wrote a nice introduction to this posting. I believed it to be funny and relatable, if you would believe that. But I decided to scrap it because nothing about this posting is funny. Not that you should ever expect anything I write to be anyway. This is my hail mary article of personal admiration to one of the greatest men to ever walk on the planet earth.
Last September, Norman Borlaug, known for winning such awards as the Nobel Peace Prize, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Congressional Gold Medal, the National Medal of Science and the Rotary International Award, officially checked out. He truly left this world better than when he joined it 95 years ago ... by saving an estimated 245 million lives over his lifetime alone. He was an agronomist who spent a majority of his life developing genetically enhanced crops which yielded significantly higher amounts of consumable food per acre, saving millions a year around the world from death by starvation. To put this in perspective, it is commonly believed that Hitler was responsible for the death of approximately six million Jews. That attempted genocide in World War II is still considered today to be one of the worst act of humanity in modern history. In his lifetime alone, Norman saved over 40 times the amount that perished in the former event.
People will absent mindedly mention that people, which they don’t know and never will because we live in America, are starving all around the world. This man and his science reduced this number by around 25%. That’s it. Those are the facts. I will likely add to this blurb later on, but for now I find this small tribute to be a necessary element to my blog.
